Kyoto

September 4th, 2010

We’ve spent a couple of days in Kyoto, and seen plenty of temples and shrines. Despite seeing lots of tourists dressed as geishas, we didn’t spot a real Geisha.

Miyajima

September 1st, 2010

Miyajima is an island near Hiroshima. It’s mostly a large park and some smallish mountains, but has many shrines and is home to the well known floating torii gate and shrine. It is also full of deer. We went on the ferry for a day trip, while staying in Hiroshima.

Hiroshima

August 31st, 2010

We’ve travelled to Hiroshima and spent the day exploring the sites. It’s a much smaller city than Osaka and Tokyo, but very lovely. Despite being small, it has a castle and temple and even a local speciality cuisine – Okonomi Yaki.

Osaka

August 30th, 2010

This is a long update since we’ve not posted in a while!

We’ve spent the last three days in Osaka. We’re still recovering from the climb. Matt’s leg is sore 🙁

Osaka is quite different to Tokyo, at least what we’ve seen. It seems more touristy and commercial, with lots of restaurants and different kinds of food, and entertainment. We’re staying in Shinsekai, which is particularly lively.

Mt Fuji is conquered, and so are we!

August 27th, 2010

Fish, Emperor and our first catch

August 25th, 2010

The jet lag hit us this morning. Although we got a good sleep last night, our bodies were sure we should be fast asleep, so we treated ourselves to a McDonalds brunch. It’s similar to English, but with Teriyaki burgers instead of barbecue burgers, and extra grease. Sadly no rice in McDonalds, despite what we were told before the trip :p

We tried going to the fish market, but it turns out it isn’t open on Wednesdays, but there was still plenty of sushi and markets selling more than just fish.

We’re just settling in for our first night in Japan. The hostel is fantastic. Our own room, with just enough room to sleep, charge our electronics and free wifi 😀

Is there still time to learn Japanese?

August 22nd, 2010

We leave in the morning, but I hope there’s still time to learn some Japanese. Apparently the locals speak very little English, so I’ve downloaded Earworms Rapid Japanese (thanks for the recommendation, Ed)

We’re off!

August 22nd, 2010

We’ve finished last-minute planning and have our flights and some places to stay booked.

I’ll try to keep updates on this blog to let you know what we’ve done and where we’re headed next.

To start, we’ll be flying in to Tokyo. Once there, we’re getting used to the world skipping to 8 hours ahead and eating lots of Sushi.
